Donât lie. I used to do this for every commandment because it made things simple to follow and keep track of. Obviously the commandments are not as simple as things to not do, but this is how I learned to obey them. For âYou shall not invoke the name of the Lord, your God, in vain,â I associated that with simply avoiding swearing.

So, God's Name, and using God's Name means being in God's qualities (i.e. love of our neighbor and love of God over love of self and the world). To be "vain" deals with superficial, or useless/empty things, so when this isGrowing up Adventist, I learned that I should never swearâespecially I must never use words that take the Lordâs name in vain. Even saying âOh my goshâ was not acceptable because it was just a slightly sanitized version of âOh my godââand this last was simply out of the question. I even refrained from using the internet favorite
